LED Luminaires Selection Guide

LED luminaires fall into five groups: panel, downlight, tri-proof, batten and rechargeable; mounting style and environment define the grouping, and ceiling type decides the choice.

This guide explains what to look at when choosing products in the LED Luminaires category.

LED luminaire types

The category is divided into five subgroups; mounting style and environment define the division.

LED High Bay Luminaires for warehouses and production areas with high ceilings, and Linear Luminaires for models that form a line of light in the ceiling, are separate categories.

What to look at when choosing an LED luminaire

  1. Ceiling type. In a suspended ceiling, the panel size must match the ceiling module (such as 60x60, 30x60, 30x30). In a plasterboard ceiling the cut-out size of the flush-mounted model, and in a concrete ceiling the height of the surface-mounted housing, is decisive.
  2. Environment. Panel and downlight models are listed in ratings such as IP20 and IP40 that include no protection against water; for damp and dusty spaces, look at tri-proof luminaires.
  3. Luminous efficacy. The short way to compare two luminaires is to divide the luminous flux by the power; the resulting lm/W value shows which model produces the same light with less energy.
  4. Color temperature. 3000 K is warm and yellowish, 6500 K is close to daylight and bluish white; 4000 K lies between the two. Choose luminaires in the same space with a single color temperature.
  5. Color rendering (CRI). Expresses out of 100 how accurately the light shows colors. In shops and workshops where color discrimination matters, compare the CRI value in the product data.
  6. Beam angle. In downlights and spots, narrow angles such as 24° and 36° are for accent, and wide angles such as 100° are for general lighting.
  7. Driver. Standard-driver and ENEC-driver versions of the same series are listed as separate products; if a certificate for the driver is required in the specification, look for this notation in the product name.

The number of luminaires needed is found by a lighting calculation made according to the room's dimensions, the ceiling height and the required illuminance.

The difference between an integrated LED luminaire and a luminaire with a lamp holder

In an integrated LED luminaire the LED module is part of the housing; it cannot be removed and replaced like a bulb. When the light source reaches the end of its life or the driver fails, the driver or the luminaire is replaced. For this reason the maintenance plan is made not with a bulb stock but with a spare luminaire from the same series; having a luminaire added later be of the same series and color temperature reduces tone differences on the ceiling. If you want to keep your existing luminaires with lamp holders, see the Bulbs category.

Brands in this category

Panel, batten and rechargeable models under the Cata brand, and tri-proof luminaires and batten luminaires named Kristal under the MAS brand, are also listed.

Order notes

Products are sold by the piece. Some models are listed as made to order; the lead time of these products is confirmed separately at the time of order. Most ACK products are sold in cartons; before adding to the cart, check the minimum sales quantity on the product page. You can find the model you are looking for by its stock code (for example AP11-02410).

Frequently asked questions

How many watts of LED luminaire does a room need?

Watts show the power the luminaire draws, not the light it gives; so it is not a measure on its own. The need is determined by a lighting calculation that starts from the room's area, the ceiling height and the illuminance required for the work done, and the result comes out in lumens. If there is a project, the luminaire type, quantity and lumen value are taken from the project.

How can you tell a high-efficiency LED luminaire?

Efficiency is the ratio of the luminous flux the luminaire gives to the power it draws, and is expressed in lm/W. You can compare two models by dividing the lumen value on the product page by the watt value; the one with the larger result produces the same light with less energy. Make the comparison between luminaires of the same type and the same color temperature; the diffuser and optical design affect the result.

What does an LED luminaire with an ENEC driver mean?

ENEC is a European mark showing the conformity of electrical products to European safety standards. If the product name says ENEC driver, this notation qualifies the LED driver inside the luminaire; it does not show that the luminaire as a whole is certified. If a certificate is required in the specification, verify which component it covers and its validity from the manufacturer's certificate.

Which luminaire is used on a concrete ceiling where a flush-mounted panel cannot be fitted?

On concrete ceilings that cannot be cut, surface-mounted LED panel luminaires mounted directly on the surface are used. If you have a slim flush-mounted panel, surface mounting can also be done with the panel housings under LED lighting accessories; verify from the product data that the housing fits the panel's size and thickness and that the driver fits inside the housing.
