Standard Step Switches Selection Guide

When selecting standard step cam switches, compare step count (1-2, 1-2-3, 0-1-2-3-4...), pole count, rated current (10 A–160 A) and with-Off (0) vs without-Off dials.

This guide explains what to look for when choosing products in the Standard Step Switches category for multi-stage heaters, transformer tap selection, multi-speed fans and test benches.

With-Off (0-1-2-3...) vs Without-Off (1-2-3...) step configurations

Step rotary cam switches route a common input to one of several outputs sequentially. Choose a With-Off (0-1-2, 0-1-2-3, up to 0-11) step switch when the switch must also turn the load completely off in position "0". Choose a Without-Off (1-2, 1-2-3, up to 1-12) step switch when a separate main switch controls power and the rotary switch only selects active taps or speed steps.

Pole count (1P, 2P, 3P) and rated current (10 A – 160 A)

Select 1-pole (1P) for single-phase tap or control signal routing, 2-pole (2P) for switching two circuits simultaneously, and 3-pole (3P) for three-phase transformer taps or balanced three-phase heater banks.

Frequently asked questions

What does "1-Pole 4-Step" mean on a rotary step switch?

It means one common input terminal is routed exclusively to output 1, 2, 3 or 4 as the handle rotates. To switch all three phases of a three-phase load across 4 steps simultaneously, select a 3-Pole 4-Step switch.

Do standard step switches close one output at a time or cumulatively?

Standard step switches close only the contact corresponding to the selected step number (position 1 closes contact 1; position 2 opens contact 1 and closes contact 2).

Are standard step switches break-before-make?

Yes, standard step cam switches use break-before-make (non-shorting) contacts so adjacent transformer taps are never bridged during rotation.
