What Is a Grounded Socket? Grounded Wall Socket Selection Guide
A grounded socket is a wall socket with a ground contact in addition to two current-carrying slots; this guide covers series, cover, IP44 and child protection.
What is a grounded socket and where is it used
A grounded socket is a wall socket mechanism that has a ground contact in addition to two current-carrying slots and allows connection of the device's protective conductor. In the Schuko design common in Europe (Type F, socket side CEE 7/3), the ground contacts are the clips on the two side edges of the socket; when a plug is inserted, the ground connection is made before the current-carrying pins. It is used in homes, offices and workshops to supply devices with a protective conductor, such as refrigerators, washing machines, computers and electric hand tools.
A socket does not provide grounding by itself: the installation must have a protective conductor and the connection must be made. This work is carried out by an authorized electrician according to the project and the manufacturer data.
Types of grounded sockets
The products in the category are recognized by a few distinctions:
- Single, double and triple models: the product type and number of sockets fields include examples with 2 and 3 slots.
- Covered models: they include a cover over the front of the slots; covered models marked IP44 are also listed.
- Child-protected models: they appear in product names as "Child-Protected" or "Ç.K."; the protective shutter feature is entered as a separate field.
- Products sold separately as mechanism and cover: for some products, the supplied components are written as "Mechanism + button/cover".
What to look at when choosing a grounded socket
- Series compatibility. Determine the name and color of your existing switch and socket series. In the same series, the frame and cover may be separate products; for frames and covers, see the relevant categories.
- Supplied components. Verify on the product page whether the product includes only the mechanism, or the mechanism together with a cover or button.
- Protection level. If the environment involves moisture or splashing, look at the IP rating. According to the IEC 60529 code, IP44 indicates protection against solid objects of 1 mm and larger and against splashing water; the valid conditions of use are in the manufacturer data. For wet areas, also review the wet location sockets category.
- Child protection. Child-protected models are distinguished in the product name by "Child-Protected" or "Ç.K."; which model will be used where is determined according to the project and the manufacturer data.
- Connection method. Product names include the terms "Screw Connection" and "Quick Connection"; the cable cross-section and connection method are determined according to the manufacturer data.
- Line load. Check the total current of the devices to be connected to the socket with the current calculation from active power tool; line and protection selection is a project matter.
The difference between a grounded socket and neighboring sockets
UPS wall sockets and USB charging sockets are listed in separate subcategories; a grounded socket, unlike these, serves only the standard socket function. For portable multi-outlet solutions, home and office power strips is the place to look. If you are looking for a general wall socket, you can also start from the main wall sockets category.
Brands in this category
Among Schneider Electric products are the Yeni Unica, Merten System-D, Merten System-M and Asfora series; the examples include aluminum, steel and bronze Asfora models and child-protected Unica and Merten sockets. On the Viko side, double, triple, covered and labeled-cover grounded sockets from the Karre, Karre 55, Karre Meridian and Yonca Plus series are listed.
Ordering notes
Products are sold by the piece. Some are listed as "made to order" (terminli); for these products, the lead time is confirmed separately. If you know the manufacturer code (for example Schneider Electric codes starting with NU, MEG or EPH), searching by stock code is the fastest way. For questions about cable and cross-section on the installation side, see the cable selection guide.
Comparison and selection table
| Selection Criterion | Standard Flush-Mount Grounded Socket | Hinged-Lid / IP44 Splash-Proof Socket | Child-Protected / UPS (Type E) / USB Socket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safety & Standard | 16 A 250 V AC Schuko (Type F) with side earth clips | Spring-loaded hinged cover protects against water splashes & dust | Internal safety shutters (child protection) or center earth pin (UPS) |
| Mounting Style | Fits standard 71 mm flush wall box (claw & screw fixing) | Flush-mount with lid or surface-mount IP44/IP54 weatherproof box | Modular flush mechanism compatible with multi-gang frames |
| Wire Termination | Screw terminals or tool-free push-in clamps (up to 2×2.5 mm²) | 3×2.5 mm² (Line + Neutral + Green-Yellow Protective Earth) | Dedicated UPS circuit identification prevents plugging heaters into UPS |
| Typical Application | Living rooms, bedrooms, offices & dry indoor walls | Bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, balconies, garages & workshops | Schools/nurseries, IT workstations (UPS feeds) & hotel headboards |
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a grounded socket and an ungrounded socket?
A grounded socket has a ground contact in addition to its two current-carrying slots and allows connection of the device's protective conductor; an ungrounded socket does not have this contact. Which one to use depends on the protective conductor in the installation and on the device. The selection and connection must be carried out by an authorized electrician according to the project and the manufacturer data.
If I fit a grounded socket in an installation without grounding, is the socket grounded?
No. The ground contact in the socket mechanism only has meaning when it is connected to a protective conductor in the installation; replacing the socket alone does not create grounding. The current state of the installation and the required modification are determined by an authorized electrician according to the project and the manufacturer data. For this reason, simply replacing the socket is not considered sufficient.
What does a child-protected grounded socket mean?
Child-protected models include an additional protective mechanism at the entrance of the slots; in the product names in the store they appear as "Child-Protected" or "Ç.K.", and for some products the field "Protective shutter: Yes" is entered. How the mechanism works may vary from series to series; for details, see the manufacturer's description.
What does an IP44 covered grounded socket mean?
According to the IEC 60529 code, IP44 indicates protection against solid objects of 1 mm and larger and against splashing water. For covered grounded sockets, this rating is valid for the conditions of use specified by the manufacturer. For places that may be submerged or washed down, see the conditions on the product page and the relevant project data.
How many amperes is a grounded socket?
There is no single value; the rated current and rated voltage vary by product and series. The valid value is the one written on the product and on the manufacturer's product page. The calculation tool gives guidance for the total current of the devices to be connected to the socket, but the selection of the line and the protective device belongs to the authorized electrician, according to the project and the manufacturer data.
