Encoders

An encoder is a feedback sensor that converts the rotation of a shaft into an electrical signal and passes position, speed and direction of rotation information to a PLC, counter or drive. It is used for speed and length measurement on conveyor and winding lines, in length cutting machines, and for motor shaft feedback. The category includes Autonics E50S8 incremental rotary encoders (5-24 V DC) at resolutions such as 100, 360, 1000 and 3600 ppr, and Delta Electronics ES5 rotary encoders with open collector (7-24 V DC) and line driver (5-12 V DC) outputs. Select the resolution (pulses per revolution, ppr) according to the measurement accuracy, the output type according to the counter or drive input, the supply voltage according to the available source, and the shaft diameter and housing size according to the mechanical connection. Because a line driver output produces a differential signal, it is preferred for long cables and requires a receiver with a differential input. An incremental encoder is not a substitute for an absolute encoder; it does not store its position when power is lost and needs to be re-referenced. The products here are external encoders coupled to a shaft; a servo motor's own encoder comes with the motor.

How to choose Encoders

An encoder is a feedback sensor that converts the rotation of a shaft into an electrical signal and passes position, speed and direction of rotation information to a PLC, counter or drive. It is used for speed and length measurement on conveyor and winding lines, in length cutting machines, and for motor shaft feedback.

  • Separate sensing, motion control, logic processing and operator interface requirements.
  • Select signal type, supply voltage, communication protocol and I/O count for the machine network.
  • Verify housing size, sensing distance and PNP/NPN output polarity against the PLC input card.

Frequently asked questions

What is Encoders and where is it used?

What should I compare when choosing Encoders?

Select the resolution (pulses per revolution, ppr) according to the measurement accuracy, the output type according to the counter or drive input, the supply voltage according to the available source, and the shaft diameter and housing size according to the mechanical connection.

Where can I find technical details for Encoders products?

An incremental encoder is not a substitute for an absolute encoder; it does not store its position when power is lost and needs to be re-referenced.
