Diodes
A diode is a two-terminal semiconductor circuit component that conducts current in only one direction, from anode to cathode, and blocks it in the reverse direction up to its withstand voltage. It is used to convert alternating current to direct current, for reverse polarity protection, and to suppress the reverse voltage produced when power to the coil is cut in relays, contactors or valves with DC coils. In this category, diodes are grouped under the Bridge Diodes subgroup; Konsan-branded bridge diodes with 35 A and 50 A current ratings and 1000 V reverse voltage are sold by the piece. Choose the diode by the average forward current that will pass through the circuit, the repetitive peak reverse voltage it will be exposed to, the housing and terminal type, and the cooling condition. A single diode passes only one half-wave of the alternating current; the common solution for full-wave rectification is a bridge diode that combines four diodes in one housing. A voltage drop, and heat resulting from it, occurs across the diode during conduction, so in high-current types the need for a heatsink is planned according to the manufacturer data.
