Dimmers

A dimmer is an adjusting element mounted in a switch box that dims and brightens the light intensity of a lamp steplessly; it does this either by chopping the mains voltage with phase cutting or by sending a 1-10 V control signal to the driver. It is used with dimmable LED, incandescent and halogen lamps in places such as living rooms, meeting rooms and restaurants where the light level is adjusted to the use. In the Viko Karre, Meridian and Karre 55 and Schneider Electric Yeni Unica, Asfora and Merten series, RL, RC, universal and 1-10 V dimmers are available in power ranges such as 3-150 W, 40-400 W/VA and 20-500 W/VA. Choose the dimmer by the load type, the total load staying between the dimmer's minimum and maximum power values, the need for a two-way connection and the series on the wall. An RL-type dimmer works with leading-edge phase cutting on resistive and inductive loads, and an RC-type dimmer with trailing-edge phase cutting on resistive and capacitive loads. A phase-cut dimmer and a 1-10 V dimmer are not interchangeable; the first chops the lamp's supply voltage, while the second sends a control signal to a driver with a 1-10 V input.

  • Clarify whether the task is connection, cable routing, enclosure distribution or termination.
  • Match dimensions, thread standard, conductor cross-section and IP rating with the cable and panel.
  • Choose housing material and pack quantity according to the mounting environment.

Frequently asked questions

What is Dimmers and where is it used?

A dimmer is an adjusting element mounted in a switch box that dims and brightens the light intensity of a lamp steplessly; it does this either by chopping the mains voltage with phase cutting or by sending a 1-10 V control signal to the driver. What should I compare when choosing Dimmers?

Choose the dimmer by the load type, the total load staying between the dimmer's minimum and maximum power values, the need for a two-way connection and the series on the wall.

Where can I find technical details for Dimmers products?

A phase-cut dimmer and a 1-10 V dimmer are not interchangeable; the first chops the lamp's supply voltage, while the second sends a control signal to a driver with a 1-10 V input.
