What Is an Energy Analyzer? Power Network Analyzer Selection Guide

An energy analyzer measures and displays voltage, current, power and energy; this selection guide covers DIN rail and panel types, harmonics and Modbus features.

What is an energy analyzer and where is it used

An energy analyzer is a device that measures and displays the voltage, current, active, reactive and apparent power, power factor and energy values of an electrical network; some models also offer harmonic distortion (THD) and a communication output. It is also known as a power network analyzer, power meter, multifunction measuring instrument or power meter (power meter); these names mostly describe the same product family.

The IEC 61557-12 standard calls these devices power metering and monitoring devices (PMD) and defines measurement accuracy by a performance class. A model's compliance with this standard must be verified from the manufacturer catalog. The device is used at the incoming of the main distribution panel, on motor and line feeders, in generator and power factor correction panels, and at energy monitoring points that serve as sub-meters. In a power factor correction panel, whether the power factor and reactive power reach the desired value is also monitored by measurement.

In this category in the store, the product type values "Energy Analyzer" and "Energy Measurement Device" are seen.

Types of energy analyzers

What to look at when choosing an energy analyzer

  1. Measurement point and phase configuration. Single-phase line, three-phase line and connection type are determined according to the project and the manufacturer data.
  2. Current input. Check whether the device measures directly or through a current transformer (mostly x/5 A); Siemens examples include both a 63 A direct input and a CT/5A input. If a transformer will be used, the ratio is entered into the device (the Entes MPR-53 manual has this menu). Measurement accuracy depends on the current transformer as much as on the device.
  3. Measured quantities. Do you need only V, A and kW, or also THD and harmonics? The Tense TPM series carries the note "up to the 63rd harmonic" in the product name; THD appears in the Schneider PM2110 name.
  4. Communication and outputs. If you need Modbus RTU (RS-485), M-Bus or a pulse output, verify it with the model code. The Entes MPR-53S is a model with a Modbus RTU interface.
  5. Accuracy class. The class expresses accuracy within the measuring range; the Schneider PM2110 name says Class 1.0. Read the class per quantity from the catalog.
  6. Supply voltage and display. Entes examples show 24-60 VAC/DC, 95-270 VAC/DC and 110-230 VAC supply options; the Schneider list has models with LED and LCD displays. An authorized electrician must make the supply and measurement connections according to the project data.

The difference between an energy analyzer and similar devices

An energy analyzer measures and displays voltage, current, power and energy. If you need to examine power quality problems in more detail, also look at the power quality analyzers category; which device records which quantity and event is written in the model catalog. An analyzer measures; the device that switches capacitor stages in and out is a reactive power control relay. A simple ammeter does not replace energy, power and harmonic values.

Ordering notes

Products are sold by the piece. Some products are listed as made to order (terminli); for these products, the delivery time is confirmed at the time of the order. You can search by stock code using codes such as ABB's 2CSG and 1SYG or Entes MPR codes.

Frequently asked questions

Are an energy analyzer and a power network analyzer the same device?

In practice, yes. Power network analyzer, energy analyzer, power meter and multifunction measuring instrument describe the same product family; the manufacturer chooses the naming. When deciding, look not at the name but at the measured quantities, the current input, the communication and the accuracy class. This information is given in the manufacturer catalog by model code.

Can an energy analyzer be used without a current transformer?

Some models are designed for direct measurement, while others have a current transformer input. In Siemens examples, models that measure 63 A directly and models with a CT/5A input are seen together. Up to which current a direct connection is allowed is written in the model catalog; the connection must be made by an authorized electrician according to the project and the manufacturer data.

Can an energy analyzer measure harmonics?

It depends on the model. In the Entes MPR-53 manual, voltage and current THD values are viewed on the display. The product name of the Tense TPM series includes the note "up to the 63rd harmonic". Simple models may not provide harmonics, so if you need harmonics, check the measured harmonic order and THD support in the catalog.

What is the difference between an energy analyzer and a power quality analyzer?

An energy analyzer measures and displays voltage, current, power and energy. Power quality analyzers are listed in a separate category in the store and are aimed at more detailed quality examination. Which device records which quantity, event or harmonic order is written in the model catalog; make the choice according to the need and the manufacturer data.

What is Modbus RTU communication used for in an energy analyzer?

Modbus RTU, which runs over RS-485, allows the measurement values in the device to be transferred to an automation, monitoring or energy management system. The Entes MPR-53S has this interface. Because models with and without communication can be under different codes of the same series, verify the full model code before ordering.
