RS485 Repeaters

An RS485 repeater is a communication device that regenerates the signal on an RS-485 line, extending the line and allowing more devices to connect to the same network. It is used on long Modbus RTU lines, in networks where the number of devices exceeds the limit of a single line segment, and when galvanic isolation is needed between panels at different ground potentials. This group includes the GMT GRP-485, which is powered by 24 V DC, has galvanic isolation, works at data rates up to 1 Mb/s and detects data direction automatically. Choose the repeater by your line's data rate, the required isolation level, supply voltage, and ESD and surge voltage protection ratings. The repeater splits the line into two separate segments; the number of devices and line termination are evaluated separately for each segment. A repeater does not convert interfaces or protocols; it does not replace a converter or gateway that connects an RS-485 line to USB or Ethernet.

How to choose RS485 Repeaters

An RS485 repeater is a communication device that regenerates the signal on an RS-485 line, extending the line and allowing more devices to connect to the same network. It is used on long Modbus RTU lines, in networks where the number of devices exceeds the limit of a single line segment, and when galvanic isolation is needed between panels at different ground potentials.

  • Separate sensing, motion control, logic processing and operator interface requirements.
  • Select signal type, supply voltage, communication protocol and I/O count for the machine network.
  • Verify housing size, sensing distance and PNP/NPN output polarity against the PLC input card.

Frequently asked questions

What is RS485 Repeaters and where is it used?

An RS485 repeater is a communication device that regenerates the signal on an RS-485 line, extending the line and allowing more devices to connect to the same network. It is used on long Modbus RTU lines, in networks where the number of devices exceeds the limit of a single line segment, and when galvanic isolation is needed between panels at different ground potentials.

What should I compare when choosing RS485 Repeaters?

Choose the repeater by your line's data rate, the required isolation level, supply voltage, and ESD and surge voltage protection ratings.

Where can I find technical details for RS485 Repeaters products?

A repeater does not convert interfaces or protocols; it does not replace a converter or gateway that connects an RS-485 line to USB or Ethernet.
