Stepper Motor Systems

Stepper motor systems are positioning solutions made up of a stepper motor that turns its shaft by a fixed angle with each incoming pulse, the drive that runs it, and its power supply. In machine building, they are used for medium-speed positioning jobs such as X-Y tables, feed and indexing axes, to build a simpler structure than a servo system. In this category, GMT products are grouped into three subgroups: stepper motors in NEMA 17, NEMA 23, NEMA 34 and NEMA 42 frame sizes, current-adjustable stepper drives, and toroidal stepper transformers with 70 V AC output that supply the drive. When setting up the system, first choose the motor according to the torque and speed the load requires, then the drive that meets the motor's phase current, and finally the supply that matches the drive's input voltage. Since drives may have DC or AC input, the supply type is determined by the drive; stepper transformers with 70 V AC output are used only with AC-input drives that accept this voltage. IGSS models with the drive integrated into the housing do not need a separate drive.

How to choose Stepper Motor Systems

Stepper motor systems are positioning solutions made up of a stepper motor that turns its shaft by a fixed angle with each incoming pulse, the drive that runs it, and its power supply. • Separate sensing, motion control, logic processing and operator interface requirements.
  • Select signal type, supply voltage, communication protocol and I/O count for the machine network.
  • Verify housing size, sensing distance and PNP/NPN output polarity against the PLC input card.
