Infrared Thermometers

An infrared thermometer (laser thermometer) is a handheld measuring instrument that measures the temperature of a surface without touching it by detecting the infrared radiation the surface emits. It is used to scan for hot spots on energized enclosures, busbars and terminal connections, or on motor and bearing housings. The Unit and Isıso models in this category show measuring ranges from -32 °C up to 400 °C, 600 °C or 1300 °C, D:S ratios such as 12:1, 20:1 and 50:1, and either a fixed emissivity of 0.95 or an adjustable emissivity between 0.1 and 1.0. Choose the temperature range, the D:S (distance-to-spot) ratio, the emissivity setting, the accuracy and the response time according to the surface and measuring distance. As the D:S ratio increases, a smaller area is measured from the same distance; because bright metal has low emissivity, a device with a fixed 0.95 setting shows a lower temperature than the actual one. Models with a range of 32 °C to 42.9 °C measure only in this narrow band and are not suitable for scanning enclosures and machine surfaces. An infrared thermometer does not replace a thermal camera: it does not form an image and gives the average temperature of the targeted area as a single value.

How to choose Infrared Thermometers

An infrared thermometer (laser thermometer) is a handheld measuring instrument that measures the temperature of a surface without touching it by detecting the infrared radiation the surface emits. It is used to scan for hot spots on energized enclosures, busbars and terminal connections, or on motor and bearing housings.

  • Identify the measurement or fastening task and the required insulation safety rating.
  • Select jaw profile, cross-section range and accessories for the conductor or fastener standard.
  • Check CAT voltage category and replacement tip or die availability for field conditions.
