Power Capacitors

A power capacitor is a power factor correction capacitor that supplies on site the reactive power drawn by inductive loads in low-voltage installations, with its rating expressed in kVAr. It is used in the steps of automatic power factor correction panels and in fixed correction at individual motors or transformers. In this category, single-phase and three-phase cylindrical and box-type power capacitors are offered from brands such as ABB, Schneider Electric, Tibcon and Entes, in ratings such as 10 kVAr, 12.5 kVAr, 20 kVAr and 25 kVAr and rated voltages such as 400 V, 440 V and 525 V. Choose the step power (kVAr) by the reactive power calculation, the rated voltage by the grid voltage and whether the step includes a harmonic filter reactor, and the housing type by the panel layout. The kVAr value on the label applies at the rated voltage; at a lower grid voltage, the reactive power a capacitor delivers decreases in proportion to the square of the voltage. Because the terminal voltage of a capacitor operating in series with a reactor is higher than the grid voltage, types with a high rated voltage such as 440 V or 525 V are used in filtered steps.

How to choose Power Capacitors

A power capacitor is a power factor correction capacitor that supplies on site the reactive power drawn by inductive loads in low-voltage installations, with its rating expressed in kVAr. It is used in the steps of automatic power factor correction panels and in fixed correction at individual motors or transformers.

  • Take reactive power demand and harmonic distortion levels from site measurements or project calculations.
  • Compare kVAr step sizes, rated voltage and step count against the compensation panel layout.
  • Select capacitor duty contactors, harmonic filter reactors and discharge resistors together with the capacitor bank.
