Motor Capacitors

A motor capacitor is an AC capacitor connected in series with the auxiliary winding of a single-phase motor, creating a phase difference between the main and auxiliary winding currents and enabling the motor to produce starting torque. It is used in single-phase motors running on a 230 V grid, such as water pumps, hydrophores, compressors, fans and washing machines. Run capacitors stay in the circuit as long as the motor is running; start capacitors, on the other hand, are switched in only during starting and are taken out of the circuit by a centrifugal switch or a start relay once the motor reaches speed. The category includes Hawcon and Tense run capacitor values such as 4 µF, 10 µF, 25 µF and 40 µF and start ranges such as 64-77 µF and 124-149 µF; Hawcon run models are labeled 400-450 V and start models 220-250 V. Choose the capacitor by the µF value written on the motor label or on the removed capacitor, its rated voltage, its function (run or start), its housing size and its connection type. Power factor correction power capacitors, which are rated in kVAr, are in a separate category.

How to choose Motor Capacitors

  • Take reactive power demand and harmonic distortion levels from site measurements or project calculations.
  • Compare kVAr step sizes, rated voltage and step count against the compensation panel layout.
  • Select capacitor duty contactors, harmonic filter reactors and discharge resistors together with the capacitor bank.
