Miniature Circuit Breakers

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) is a modular circuit breaker that interrupts the line with thermal tripping on overload and magnetic tripping on short circuit, and is reset once the fault is cleared. It is mounted on a DIN rail in residential, commercial and industrial panels to protect lighting, socket, control and small motor outputs. ABB, Schneider Electric, Siemens and Chint series include 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-pole models with B and C curves, in currents such as 6 A, 10 A, 16 A, 25 A and 32 A, with breaking capacities of 4.5 kA, 6 kA and 10 kA, as well as DC miniature circuit breakers for photovoltaic lines. Choose the rated current according to the cable cross-section and load current, the tripping curve according to the load's inrush current (B for loads with low inrush current, C for general use and motor loads), and the breaking capacity according to the short-circuit current at the connection point. Because breaking capacity is defined differently in IEC/EN 60898-1 and IEC/EN 60947-2, evaluate nameplate values against the same standard. A miniature circuit breaker is not a substitute for a residual current device; protection against earth leakage requires a residual current device or a miniature circuit breaker with residual current protection.

How to choose Miniature Circuit Breakers

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) is a modular circuit breaker that interrupts the line with thermal tripping on overload and magnetic tripping on short circuit, and is reset once the fault is cleared. It is mounted on a DIN rail in residential, commercial and industrial panels to protect lighting, socket, control and small motor outputs.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.
