Profibus Cables

A Profibus cable is a communication cable that connects stations on the Profibus field bus, with a single shielded twisted pair, recognized by its purple sheath in DP types. It is used for communication of devices such as PLCs, remote I/O stations, drives and operator panels on the Profibus DP line, and of process instruments on the Profibus PA line. In this category, Profibus DP cables in a 1x2x0.64 mm (22 AWG) configuration from manufacturers such as Mekas, 2M Kablo and Erse, along with FC types suitable for fast connection, PA types and halogen-free LSZH-sheathed types, are sold by the meter. After determining the line type as DP or PA, choose the sheath material according to the environment, the conductor construction according to fixed or moving installation, and the cable construction according to the connector. A Profibus DP line requires cable with a characteristic impedance of 150 ohms and a terminating resistor at both ends of the segment; the permitted line length gets shorter as the communication speed increases. It should not be confused with a Profinet cable: Profibus is a single-pair serial bus cable, while Profinet is an industrial Ethernet cable with a green sheath.

How to choose Profibus Cables

A Profibus cable is a communication cable that connects stations on the Profibus field bus, with a single shielded twisted pair, recognized by its purple sheath in DP types. It is used for communication of devices such as PLCs, remote I/O stations, drives and operator panels on the Profibus DP line, and of process instruments on the Profibus PA line.

  • Clarify the circuit duty first: power distribution, control, fire safety, Ethernet or analog signal.
  • Compare conductor cross-section, core count, insulation and shielding against the installation route.
  • Switch to the proper cable family early when flex duty, oil resistance, halogen-free jacket or fire integrity is required.
