Step Switches

A step switch is a cam switch with several operating positions that connects the common terminal to the next output each time the rotary handle is turned. It is used to move from position to position in loads that are changed step by step, such as the winding ends of tapped transformers and regulators, heater groups and multi-speed fan circuits. First choose the subgroup, then the number of steps, number of phases, rated current and the need for a 0 position according to the load's wiring diagram. The subgroups are standard, selector and mains step switches; the standard group has Metop and Opaş brand types such as 1- and 3-phase with 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 steps, while the other two groups have Metop brand single-phase models. On Opaş products, the 66x66 or 90x90 mm frame size is written in the product name. At the same current and number of steps, single-phase and three-phase types are separate items, so read the phase information in the product name together with the number of steps.

How to choose Step Switches

A step switch is a cam switch with several operating positions that connects the common terminal to the next output each time the rotary handle is turned. It is used to move from position to position in loads that are changed step by step, such as the winding ends of tapped transformers and regulators, heater groups and multi-speed fan circuits.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.
