Switches

A switch is a switching device that opens and closes an electrical circuit manually or automatically and, depending on its type, also provides protection against overload and short circuit. It is used at panel incomers and distribution outgoings to protect the line, start motors, transfer a load between two sources and take a machine off power for maintenance. The main subgroups are molded case circuit breakers, open type power circuit breakers, motor protection circuit breakers, cam switches, transfer switches and load break switches; Schneider Electric, ABB and Siemens predominate among circuit breakers and Metop among cam switches. First determine the function and choose the subgroup accordingly: if protection is needed, compare the rated current, short-circuit breaking capacity, number of poles and trip unit; if only switching is needed, compare the current, number of poles and position diagram. Cam switches and load break switches are not made to interrupt short-circuit current; in these circuits, protection is provided by the circuit breaker or fuse at the head of the line.

How to choose Switches

A switch is a switching device that opens and closes an electrical circuit manually or automatically and, depending on its type, also provides protection against overload and short circuit. It is used at panel incomers and distribution outgoings to protect the line, start motors, transfer a load between two sources and take a machine off power for maintenance.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.
