Cam Switches

A cam switch is a manually operated switch that moves contact packs stacked on a shaft from position to position with a rotary handle. It is used on machines and panels to switch a load on and off, to change a motor's direction of rotation or speed, to perform star-delta starting and to change between transformer or heater steps. Subgroups are divided by function: on-off, step, pole-changing reversing, star-delta, two-speed Dahlander and gas-shielded welding machine switches; most products are Metop and Opaş brand, and Schneider Electric cam switches are also available. First determine the position diagram, then compare the rated current and the number of phases or poles with the load's nameplate values, and the frame size such as 66x66 or 90x90 mm and the enclosed or open construction with the mounting location. In the product name, the terms with 0 and without 0 indicate whether an off (0) position exists, and sequences such as 1-0-2 show the order of the handle positions. A cam switch does not provide overload and short-circuit protection; protection is provided separately by a fuse, molded case circuit breaker or motor protection circuit breaker.

How to choose Cam Switches

A cam switch is a manually operated switch that moves contact packs stacked on a shaft from position to position with a rotary handle. It is used on machines and panels to switch a load on and off, to change a motor's direction of rotation or speed, to perform star-delta starting and to change between transformer or heater steps.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.
