Transfer Switches

A transfer switch is a switching device that connects a load to one of two separate supply sources and performs the changeover between the sources in a single housing. It is used at the input of the distribution panel in buildings and facilities where load transfer is required between the mains and a generator or between two separate transformer outputs. This category includes ABB's manual, motorized and automatic transfer switches, Schneider Electric's automatic (TA) and remote-controlled (TR) series, and accessories such as bridging bars, terminal covers, auxiliary contacts and communication modules. Choose the transfer switch according to its rated current, number of poles, mains voltage and whether the changeover will be made manually, remotely or automatically. Product names state currents such as 100 A, 200 A, 400 A and 630 A and pole information such as 2P, 3P and 4P; in a three-phase system, a four-pole model is needed if the neutral is to be switched as well. A transfer switch must not be confused with a load break switch: a load break switch isolates a single source from the circuit, while a transfer switch transfers the load between two sources.

How to choose Transfer Switches

A transfer switch is a switching device that connects a load to one of two separate supply sources and performs the changeover between the sources in a single housing. It is used at the input of the distribution panel in buildings and facilities where load transfer is required between the mains and a generator or between two separate transformer outputs.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.

Frequently asked questions

What is Transfer Switches and where is it used?

A transfer switch is a switching device that connects a load to one of two separate supply sources and performs the changeover between the sources in a single housing. It is used at the input of the distribution panel in buildings and facilities where load transfer is required between the mains and a generator or between two separate transformer outputs.

What should I compare when choosing Transfer Switches?

Choose the transfer switch according to its rated current, number of poles, mains voltage and whether the changeover will be made manually, remotely or automatically.

Where can I find technical details for Transfer Switches products?

A transfer switch must not be confused with a load break switch: a load break switch isolates a single source from the circuit, while a transfer switch transfers the load between two sources.
