Load Break Switches

A load break switch (load break disconnector) is a switching device that can open and close a circuit under load current and isolates the line from the supply in the open position. It is used as the main switch at the panel input, as a maintenance disconnector at the machine and as a DC-side disconnector in photovoltaic systems, to leave the circuit without power before work. Among ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens products there are AC load break switches, fused load break switches, solar DC disconnectors and emergency-stop type models, as well as accessories such as handles, shafts and terminal covers; Tibcon and Sigma horizontal type models are listed in a separate subcategory. Choose the load break switch according to its rated current, number of poles, AC or DC use, the IEC 60947-3 utilization category corresponding to the type of load (for example AC-21 for resistive loads, AC-23 for motor loads) and, for fused types, the fuse size. Product names state currents such as 12 A, 25 A, 125 A, 175 A and 315 A. A load break switch is not a protective device on its own: unfused types do not interrupt short-circuit current; that task belongs to the upstream fuse or circuit breaker.

How to choose Load Break Switches

A load break switch (load break disconnector) is a switching device that can open and close a circuit under load current and isolates the line from the supply in the open position. It is used as the main switch at the panel input, as a maintenance disconnector at the machine and as a DC-side disconnector in photovoltaic systems, to leave the circuit without power before work.

  • Separate overcurrent/leakage protection, motor starting and local isolation requirements.
  • Select rated current, pole count and breaking capacity (kA) from the installation calculation.
  • Match coil voltage, auxiliary contacts and tripping curve to the control circuit and load type.

Frequently asked questions

What is Load Break Switches and where is it used?
