Digital I/O Modules

A digital I/O module is a PLC expansion module that combines input channels reading on-off signals and output channels driving loads in the same housing. It is used in small expansions where a few sensors and a few valves or contactors are to be added, to provide a solution with a single module on the rail instead of installing separate input and output modules. This category includes Delta Electronics modules with 4 inputs 4 outputs and 8 inputs 8 outputs, expansion modules with 14 digital inputs and 10 outputs for the GEMO AR2 smart relay, and the GMT GXM series; on Delta and GEMO models the output is of relay or transistor type. Select the model according to the number of inputs and outputs required, whether the input is NPN or PNP type, whether the output will be relay or transistor, the supply voltage, and the series of the main unit it will connect to. These modules should not be confused with mixed analog and digital modules: there are no analog channels here, and an analog module is required for 0-10 V or 4-20 mA signals.

How to choose Digital I/O Modules

A digital I/O module is a PLC expansion module that combines input channels reading on-off signals and output channels driving loads in the same housing. It is used in small expansions where a few sensors and a few valves or contactors are to be added, to provide a solution with a single module on the rail instead of installing separate input and output modules.

  • Separate sensing, motion control, logic processing and operator interface requirements.
  • Select signal type, supply voltage, communication protocol and I/O count for the machine network.
  • Verify housing size, sensing distance and PNP/NPN output polarity against the PLC input card.
