Shunt Reactors
A shunt reactor is a coil connected in parallel with the grid that draws inductive reactive power and balances the capacitive reactive power the facility generates. It is added to the power factor correction panel in facilities that shift toward capacitive because of LED lighting, UPS units and long cable runs, to keep the capacitive reactive energy ratio below the limit set by regulation. The category has 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase subgroups; the Tibcon and Entes ENT.SRS series include ratings such as 0.5 kVAr, 1.5 kVAr, 5 kVAr, 10 kVAr and 20 kVAr. Choose the reactor power (kVAr) by the capacitive reactive power calculated from analyzer or meter data, the phase configuration by how the capacitive load is distributed across the phases, the rated voltage and frequency by the grid, and the power steps by the relay's step plan. If the capacitive load is not evenly distributed across the phases, correction is done per phase with single-phase reactors; if it is balanced, with a three-phase reactor. Reactor steps are switched in through a contactor by a reactive power control relay that can connect shunt reactors; in SVC systems, they are adjusted steplessly with an inductive load driver.

How to choose Shunt Reactors
A shunt reactor is a coil connected in parallel with the grid that draws inductive reactive power and balances the capacitive reactive power the facility generates. It is added to the power factor correction panel in facilities that shift toward capacitive because of LED lighting, UPS units and long cable runs, to keep the capacitive reactive energy ratio below the limit set by regulation.
- Take reactive power demand and harmonic distortion levels from site measurements or project calculations.
- Compare kVAr step sizes, rated voltage and step count against the compensation panel layout.
- Select capacitor duty contactors, harmonic filter reactors and discharge resistors together with the capacitor bank.
