Clamp Meters

A clamp meter (clamp ammeter) is a handheld measuring instrument that measures current without interrupting the circuit by closing its openable jaws around the conductor. It is used to measure the current drawn by loads at enclosure outputs and on motor and air conditioner supplies, and to detect phase imbalance and overload. This category lists Unit's True RMS models that measure AC only and those that can measure AC/DC, fork-type open-jaw clamp meters and leakage current clamp meters, with current ranges such as 400 A, 600 A, 1000 A and 2000 A and jaw openings such as 28 mm, 42 mm and 63 mm. Choose the measurement type according to whether the circuit is AC or DC, the current range according to the highest expected current, the jaw opening according to the cable or busbar size, the True RMS feature according to the waveform of the load, and the measurement category (CAT) according to the installation. When measuring load current, only a single conductor is taken into the jaws: if phase and neutral are clamped together, the currents cancel each other and the display reads only the difference between them, that is, the leakage current. Most clamp meters also measure voltage and resistance, but they do not replace a multimeter connected in series with the circuit for precise measurement of small currents.

How to choose Clamp Meters

A clamp meter (clamp ammeter) is a handheld measuring instrument that measures current without interrupting the circuit by closing its openable jaws around the conductor. It is used to measure the current drawn by loads at enclosure outputs and on motor and air conditioner supplies, and to detect phase imbalance and overload.

  • Identify the measurement or fastening task and the required insulation safety rating.
  • Select jaw profile, cross-section range and accessories for the conductor or fastener standard.
  • Check CAT voltage category and replacement tip or die availability for field conditions.
