What Is a Connector Protective Cover? Types and Selection Criteria
A connector protective cover is a blind cover that closes the exposed contact face of an unmated multi-contact plug or socket against dust, water and impact.
A connector protective cover is a blind cover that closes the exposed contact face of a rectangular multi-contact plug or socket when it is separated from its mating half. It has no electrical connection; it protects the contacts from dust, water, impact and dirt. It is used while a machine is moved, while a mould or fixture is changed, or when a connection will stay unused for a long time.
Types
Covers are distinguished by the housing form of the half they close, not by the contact layout:
- Plug cover: Closes the face of a cable-mounted plug.
- Extension socket cover: Closes the face of a socket on a cable end.
- Machine plug and machine socket cover: Closes the face of housings fixed to a machine or panel surface.
- Cover with latch: Locks with its own latch onto a half that has no latch. In the Mete Enerji catalog the latch can be on either the socket or the plug side; the 29642 plug cover comes with a latch, so check that the half it will close has no latch.
Selection criteria
- Housing size and series: Choose the cover from the same manufacturer and the same housing size as the connector it will go on. As their names say, TP Elektrik covers fit both 4x10A and 5x10A housings; Mete Enerji cover names state only 5x10A.
- Plug or socket: The cover is the counterpart of the half it closes. A plug cover does not fit a socket, and a socket cover does not fit a plug.
- Cable end or machine housing: TP Elektrik has four separate covers for the cable plug, extension socket, machine plug and machine socket. Straight and angled housings use the same cover.
- Locking: Check whether the cover locks with its own latch or with the latch of the other half; a cover that does not lock falls off under vibration.
- Protection rating: TP Elektrik cover names state IP 65. This applies when the cover is fully seated and locked.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the cover by contact count: The plug, extension socket and machine socket covers of the same 5x10A connector are different.
- Fitting another brand's cover: Housing size and latch pins can differ between brands; without the manufacturer's compatibility information, match the same brand.
- Using a CEE cover: Covers for round CEE plugs and sockets do not fit rectangular connector housings.

Frequently asked questions
Can the same protective cover be used on a plug and a socket?
No. The plug-side cover is made for the face of the plug and the socket-side cover for the face of the socket; neither fits the other.
Does an angled plug need a separate cover?
Not with TP Elektrik: one cover fits the straight and angled plug, and one fits the straight and angled machine socket.
Can the same cover be used on 4x10A and 5x10A connectors?
TP Elektrik covers are shared by both layouts. Mete Enerji cover names state only 5x10A; confirm compatibility before using one on a 4x10A Mete Enerji connector.
Is a connector with its cover fitted waterproof?
TP Elektrik covers are IP 65; protection against dust and water jets applies when the cover is fully seated and locked. This rating is not enough where the connector may be submerged.
