What Is a Recessed LED Garden Luminaire? Types and Selection Criteria
A recessed (flush-mounted) LED garden luminaire is an outdoor luminaire set into soil, concrete or a wall, leaving only its front glass visible, used to light trees, facades and paths.
A recessed (flush-mounted) LED garden luminaire is an outdoor LED luminaire whose body is set into soil, concrete, paving or a wall, leaving only the front glass and frame at the surface. Because the body is hidden, it does not spoil the landscape; it is used to highlight trees, facades and columns and to mark footpaths and steps.
Types of recessed LED garden luminaire
| Type | Where it is recessed | Use |
|---|---|---|
| In-ground uplight | Soil, concrete or paving | Highlighting tree trunks and crowns, facades, columns |
| Path and edge marker light | Footpath, terrace or pool-edge paving | Marking path lines and edges at low power |
| Wall-recessed luminaire | Garden wall, retaining wall, stair side wall | Lighting steps and path surfaces from the side |
Selection criteria
- Ingress protection (IP): Water can collect around a luminaire set into the ground; look for IP67, resistant to temporary immersion, or IP68 if it may stay under water continuously. For a wall-recessed luminaire, IP65 against rain is common.
- Load resistance: For a luminaire placed in ground that people will walk on or vehicles will cross, the load it can carry must be stated in the datasheet. Do not put a luminaire rated only for pedestrian load into a driveway.
- Front glass temperature and glare: Where people walk, the front glass should not get hot and upward light should not dazzle; choose low-power models on paths.
- Beam angle: A narrow angle is used for slim tree trunks and columns, a wide angle for tree crowns and wide facades. An adjustable inner body makes it easier to aim after installation.
- Installation sleeve and drainage: A recessing sleeve makes removal easier. Put gravel or a drainage layer under the luminaire.
- Cable entry and supply: The cable must enter through a sealed cable gland and joints must be made with sealed connectors. Protect the outdoor lighting circuit with a residual current device.
Common mistakes
- Installing without drainage: In clay soil water collects under the luminaire and the seal fails over time.
- Leaving the luminaire below ground level: Soil, grass and leaves cover the front glass and the light is lost. The glass should be level with or slightly above the finished ground.
- Taping a cable joint in the soil: Moisture gets into the joint and the residual current device trips.
- Putting a pedestrian-rated luminaire in a driveway: The glass and body break under load.

The particular requirements for ground-recessed luminaires are in IEC 60598-2-13. IP ratings are defined in IEC 60529.

Frequently asked questions
Can you step on a recessed garden luminaire?
You can step on models whose datasheet gives a pedestrian or vehicle load. Do not put a luminaire with no stated load into a footpath; place it in soil or lawn where it lights its target.
Is IP67 or IP68 needed?
IP67 is enough where the luminaire may be under water briefly in rain. Choose IP68 where water can collect continuously or the luminaire will stay under water; the test conditions for IP68 are given in the manufacturer's datasheet.
Recessed or surface-mounted garden luminaire?
Choose recessed if the body should not be visible and the light is to shine upwards from below. If you want an easy installation without digging that lights the path from the side, a surface-mounted lawn luminaire or wall light is more suitable.
