What Is a Laser Alignment Device (Line Laser)? Types and Selection Criteria
A laser alignment device (line laser) is a measuring tool that projects horizontal and vertical laser lines onto walls, ceilings and floors to create a visible reference for fitting work.
A laser alignment device (line laser, laser level) is a measuring tool that projects horizontal and vertical laser lines onto walls, ceilings and floors to create a visible reference for fitting work. It is used to bring cable trays, trunking, enclosures, sockets and luminaire runs to one level, and to level suspended ceilings, partitions and tiling. Laser shaft alignment systems for motor and pump couplings are a separate product group.
Types of laser alignment device
| Type | Line layout | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Cross line laser | One horizontal and one vertical line | Aligning sockets and switches, fitting on a single wall |
| Multi-line laser | Several vertical lines and one horizontal line | Transferring right angles and corners, partition walls |
| 360° (3D) laser | Horizontal and vertical lines all around the device | One level around the whole room, suspended ceilings, cable tray routes |
Selection criteria
- Beam colour: The red beam model in the catalogue works at 635 nm, the green beam models in the 510–520 nm band. The eye is more sensitive to green, so a green line is easier to see in bright rooms and at long range; in dim rooms a red beam is enough.
- Line layout: If you work on one wall, a cross line is enough. If all the walls of a room need a reference at the same time, choose a model with a 360° horizontal line.
- Accuracy: Given as ± mm / 10 m. For example, at ±3 mm/10 m the deviation at the end of a 20 m wall can reach ±6 mm. For long runs, choose a tighter tolerance.
- Self-levelling range: The models in the catalogue level themselves within a tilt of ±3° or ±3.5°. Outside this range the line is not accurate; most models flash the line to warn.
- Working distance and outdoor use: The visible line distance depends on the ambient light. In sunlight the line is invisible; outdoors use a model that works with a detector (laser receiver).
- Power supply: The models in the catalogue run on 2 × AA batteries or on Li-ion batteries such as 4000 mAh and 5200 mAh.
- Laser safety: The models in the catalogue are laser Class 2; the class according to IEC 60825-1 is given on the device label. Do not look into the beam and never point it at anyone's eyes.
Common mistakes
- Taking a level line with self-levelling locked: In locked mode the device does not correct itself; the lock is for protecting the pendulum in transport and for deliberately drawing a sloped line.
- Not checking the accuracy of a dropped device: Check it with the method in the user manual; usually the device is set up close to one wall and then close to the opposite wall, and the marks on both walls are compared. If they differ by more than the stated tolerance, send it for adjustment.
- Looking for the line by eye in sunlight: Outdoors the line is not visible; a level taken without a detector is wrong.
- Ignoring tolerance over long distances: Accuracy grows with distance; a deviation acceptable at 10 m triples at 30 m.
Laser alignment devices in the catalogue
The Laser Alignment Devices category on Welibaba has 7 active products. All are Unit and priced on request:
- Red beam: LM570R-I (635 nm, one horizontal and one vertical line, 2 × AA batteries, ±3 mm/10 m).
- Green beam: LM555LD (510–515 nm, four vertical lines and one horizontal line, ±3.5° self-levelling, ±2 mm/10 m), LM570LD-II, LM573LD-II, LM575LD, LM576LD and LM585LD. The names of the LM576LD and LM585LD state a 30 m working distance; the LM585LD projects a 360° horizontal line.
For distance measurement see the Laser Distance Meters category, and for slope and angle measurement the Angle Measuring Instruments category.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a green or a red laser?
A green laser is easier to see in bright rooms and on long lines. In dim rooms and over short distances a red laser is enough and is usually more economical.
Can a laser alignment device be used in sunlight?
In sunlight the line cannot be seen by eye. Outdoors, a model that works with a detector and a compatible laser receiver are used.
Should I buy a cross line or a 360° laser?
A cross line is enough for sockets, switches and fitting on a single wall. To see one level around the whole room, or to lay out a suspended ceiling or a cable tray route, a model with a 360° horizontal line speeds up the job.
Is a Class 2 laser dangerous to the eyes?
With a Class 2 laser, the blink reflex protects the eye during brief accidental exposure. Even so, do not stare into the beam on purpose and do not point it at anyone's eyes.
