What Is a Panel Label? Types and Selection Criteria
A panel label is a label stuck on an electrical panel's door, devices and circuit outputs to show the circuit name or an electrical hazard warning.
A panel label is a label stuck on the door of an electrical panel, on the devices inside it and on circuit outputs to show the circuit name, device code or an electrical hazard warning. In distribution, control and power factor correction panels it shows which line each breaker feeds and warns people approaching the panel of the hazard.
Types
| Type | What it shows | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit identification label | Circuit name, line or device code | On or below breakers and switches |
| Warning label | Electrical hazard | Panel door, door of a hazardous compartment |
A warning label does not replace a circuit identification label; most panels need both. Where the text will change later, a label holder can be used.
Selection criteria
- Size: A circuit label must fit the length of the code and the free space. One module of a miniature circuit breaker is 17.5 mm wide, so a 17 mm edge fits the front of a single-module breaker. For a warning label the reading distance sets the size: a large label on a door seen from a distance, a small one on a device.
- Pack quantity: Count the points to be labelled and keep spares for changes.
- Surface and environment: An adhesive label holds on a clean, dry, grease-free surface. Hot devices, humidity and sunlight wear down the adhesive and the text; outdoors a stainless steel label lasts longer.
- Coding: The code on the label must match the code on the panel diagram.
Common mistakes
- Sticking the warning label inside the door: The warning must be visible before the door is opened.
- Sticking labels on dusty or greasy surfaces: The label soon peels.
- Not updating labels when circuits change: The wrong line is switched off during maintenance.
- Writing codes that do not match the diagram: The right circuit cannot be found when tracing a fault.
Relevant rules
- ISO 7010: The electrical hazard warning sign is defined under code W012.
- Turkish Health and Safety Signs Regulation (Turkish Health and Safety Signs Regulation): Warning signs are triangles with a black edge and a black symbol on a yellow background.

Frequently asked questions
What size should a breaker label be?
It depends on the length of the code and the free space on the front of the breaker. A 17 x 30 mm label suits short codes, and 17 x 50 and 17 x 75 mm labels suit longer circuit names.
Where on the panel should the warning label go?
Where it is seen without opening the door, usually on the outside of the door; on panels with several compartments, also on the door of the hazardous compartment.
Can adhesive labels be used on an outdoor panel?
Sunlight, humidity and heat wear down the adhesive and the text. Where the text must last, choose a stainless steel label or a protected label holder.
