What Is a Socket Set? Types and Selection Criteria
A socket set is a hand tool set of sockets and bits in different sizes that enclose nuts and bolt heads and fit a square drive ratchet.
A socket is an interchangeable wrench head that fully encloses a nut or bolt head and fits, through the square recess at its back, onto a ratchet, a socket handle or an extension. A socket set brings sockets of different sizes, and depending on the set a ratchet, extensions and bits, together in one case. A socket fits only a handle of its own square drive size.
Types of sockets and bits
| Type | Feature | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 6-point socket | Grips the nut on its flats | General work and tight connections; protects the nut corners |
| 12-point socket | Fits the nut at more angles | Tight spaces where the handle has little swing |
| Deep socket | Long body | Nuts on long studs or bolts |
| Bit set | Slotted, Phillips, hex or Torx bits fit a bit holder | Removing screws and bolts with the same handle |
| Hex and Torx bit sockets | The bit is fixed in the socket body | Hex and Torx socket bolts tightened with high force |
| Impact socket | Thick wall, made for impact tools | Pneumatic and cordless impact wrenches |
Selection criteria
- Square drive size: 1/4" is for small fasteners and tight spaces, 3/8" for general work, 1/2" for larger bolts and high tightening torque. Handle and socket must be the same size; an adapter is needed to combine different sizes.
- Size range: The set should cover the nut sizes you remove most often. Hex head bolts need a 10 mm socket for M6 and a 13 mm socket for M8.
- Metric or inch: Use metric sockets on metric nuts and inch sockets on inch nuts; a socket of a nearby size leaves play and rounds the corners.
- Depth: If the stud protrudes above the nut, a standard socket does not seat on the nut; choose a deep socket.
- Set contents: Check the product page contents list for a ratchet, extension and bit holder.
Common mistakes
- Using hand sockets on an impact wrench: A hand socket can crack on an impact tool; use impact sockets on the tool.
- Forcing a large bolt with a 1/4" set: A small drive is not made for high torque; the square drive or ratchet gets damaged.
- Not seating the socket fully on the nut: A half-seated socket rounds the nut corners.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a 1/4" or a 1/2" socket set?
For panels, equipment and small machines with small bolts and tight spaces, a 1/4" set is enough. Large bolts, vehicle and heavy machine work need high torque; choose a 1/2" set for these.
When is a deep socket needed?
If a stud or long bolt protrudes above the nut, a standard socket does not seat fully on the nut. The long body of a deep socket takes in the stud and grips the nut fully.
What is the difference between 6-point and 12-point sockets?
A 6-point socket grips the nut on its flats and protects the corners better on tight and rusted connections. A 12-point socket fits the nut at more angles, which helps in tight spaces where the handle has little swing.
What is the difference between a star (Torx) bit and a hex bit?
A hex bit fits a hexagon socket, a star (Torx) bit fits a six-lobed star socket. The profiles are not interchangeable; match the bolt's socket.
