What Is Steel Wire Braided PVC-Coated Galvanized Spiral Conduit? Types and Selection

A steel wire braided PVC-coated galvanized spiral conduit is a cable protection conduit with a galvanized steel core, PVC jacket and outer steel braid, resisting liquids and abrasion.

Original Welibaba illustration of Steel Wire Braided PVC-Coated Galvanized Spiral Conduits

A steel wire braided PVC-coated galvanized spiral conduit is a multilayer cable protection conduit with a PVC jacket over a flexible galvanized steel spiral core and a steel wire braid over the jacket. The steel core protects the cable against crushing, the PVC jacket against liquids and dust, and the outer braid protects the jacket against abrasion and impact. It is used on machine and industrial runs where oil splash, swarf and constant rubbing occur together.

Selection criteria

  1. Size: The number in the CTPS code (10, 13, 16, 21, 26, 35, 40, 51) identifies the size series; it is not the inner diameter as such. The inner diameter must be comfortably larger than the cable bundle; check the inner and outer diameters on the product page.
  2. Temperature: The PVC jacket sets the limit. Ortaç gives -15 °C to +70 °C for this series. On runs passing near ovens, exhausts or hot surfaces, choose an unjacketed braided conduit; Ortaç lists its unjacketed CTS series with a much wider temperature range.
  3. Sealing and fittings: Ortaç rates the series IP65; this protection is achieved when a suitable fitting is fitted to the conduit end. The jacket and braid increase the outer diameter, so choose the fitting by this conduit's outer diameter, not by the unjacketed conduit with the same code, and by the thread of the panel entry (PG or metric).
  4. Coil length: Choose a coil long enough for the run; a single length without joints keeps the run sealed.
  5. Bending: The tightest bend on the route must be larger than the minimum bending radius on the datasheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a steel wire braided PVC-coated conduit and a PVC-coated conduit?

Both have a galvanized steel core and a PVC jacket. The braided type also has a steel wire braid over the jacket, which protects it against abrasion and impact. Choose the braided type where the cable rubs constantly or swarf is present.

What is the difference between CTPS and CTS spiral conduit?

Both are Ortaç steel wire braided galvanized conduits and use the same size codes. CTPS has a PVC jacket under the braid and is sealed against liquids. CTS has no jacket; it is not sealed against liquids but can be used at higher temperatures.

What temperatures is a steel wire braided PVC-coated spiral conduit suitable for?

Ortaç gives -15 °C to +70 °C for the CTPS series. Use an unjacketed braided conduit in hotter zones.

In what lengths is CTPS spiral conduit sold?

Codes CTPS 10–21 are sold by the metre in multiples of a 50 m coil, and CTPS 26–51 in multiples of a 25 m coil.
