What Is a Surface-Mounted LED Garden Luminaire? Types and Selection Criteria
A surface-mounted LED garden luminaire is an outdoor luminaire screwed onto a wall, ground or pillar surface, needing no digging, used to light entrances, terraces and paths.
A surface-mounted LED garden luminaire is an outdoor LED luminaire whose body is screwed onto a wall, ground or pillar surface, with the cable entering the body from behind or below. Because it needs no digging or recessing sleeve, it is easy to install and maintain; it is used at garden entrances, terraces, along footpaths, on garden walls and around buildings.
Types of surface-mounted LED garden luminaire
| Type | Mounting surface | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Garden wall light | Wall or facade | Entrances, terraces, around doors |
| Lawn luminaire (bollard) | Fixed to the ground with a flange | Along footpaths, lawns |
| Pillar-top luminaire | Top of a garden wall or gate pillar | Garden walls, entrance gates |
| Adjustable spotlight | Ground or wall | Highlighting trees, sculptures and facades |
Selection criteria
- Ingress protection (IP): IP65 (dust-tight, protected against water jets) is common for luminaires exposed to rain. Check the value in the datasheet.
- Light direction: A downward luminaire lights the path and ground without glare. An up-and-down wall light creates lines of light on a facade. On footpaths, prefer a lawn luminaire that directs light downwards.
- Housing material: An aluminium housing dissipates heat well, and its paint should be durable. A polycarbonate (PC) housing does not corrode and is light; if it will be exposed to sun for long periods, ask about UV resistance.
- Integrated LED or lamp holder: In an integrated LED model the power and light colour are fixed. In an E27 or GU10 lamp-holder model you choose the LED lamp later; do not exceed the maximum lamp wattage on the label.
- Impact resistance: In children's play areas, car parks and public areas, choose a housing with a high IK impact rating.
- Cable connection: On a wall, the cable must enter from a sealed junction box behind the luminaire or through a cable gland in the body. Protect the outdoor lighting circuit with a residual current device.
Common mistakes
- Bringing the cable in from the top: Water runs along the cable into the body. Bring the cable in from below or behind and leave a drip loop under the entry.
- Using an indoor surface spotlight outdoors: Moisture gets into the body and the LED and driver soon fail.
- Mounting a wall light below eye level or facing upwards: It dazzles passers-by.
Related standards
IP ratings are defined in IEC 60529 and IK impact ratings in IEC 62262.

Frequently asked questions
Wall light or lawn luminaire for a garden path?
If the path runs along a wall, use a wall light; along paths without a wall and lawn edges, use a lawn luminaire. In both cases choose a model that directs light downwards.
Which IP rating does a surface-mounted garden luminaire need?
IP65 is common on walls and ground exposed to rain. Luminaires that may stand in puddles on the ground need a higher rating; in that case look at the IP67 and IP68 ratings given for recessed types.
Solar or wired wall light?
If laying a cable is difficult and the wall gets sun all day, a solar wall light is practical. If you need light of the same duration and power every night, a wired luminaire is more reliable; compare solar models by lumen value rather than wattage.
