What Is a Three-Phase Rubber Plug? Types and Selection Criteria
A three-phase rubber plug is a rubber-bodied plug fitted to a portable three-phase machine or extension cord, mating with a three-phase rubber socket of the same system.
A three-phase rubber plug is an impact-resistant, rubber-bodied male connector fitted to the end of a portable three-phase machine or an extension cord, mating with a three-phase rubber socket of the same system. It connects movable machines such as welding machines, compressors and pumps to workshop and site sockets. Rubber plugs named 3x25A and 4x25A are not CEE standard (IEC 60309) and do not fit a red CEE socket.

3x25A (Mete Enerji, TP Elektrik) and 4x25A (TEM) are both 25 A three-phase products; the 3 and 4 may describe the pin layout. Pin layouts can differ between brands, so compare them before mixing brands.
Selection criteria
- Existing socket: Choose the plug from the socket: brand, current rating and pin layout must match. In a new installation, buy the plug and socket from the same range.
- Current: The current on the machine's rating plate must not exceed the plug's rated current.
- Cable: For portable use, use rubber-sheathed flexible cable (e.g. H07RN-F). A 3P+E plug takes four cores: three phases and the green-yellow earth. Its outer diameter must suit the cable entry and strain relief, and its cross-section the machine's current and the cable length.
- Degree of protection: The plugs with IP44 in their names are the TEM 16 A and 32 A, TP Elektrik and Bylion models. IP44 protects against splashing water; a connection is only as protected as the lower-rated of the plug and socket.
Common mistakes when wiring a plug
- Leaving the earth core unconnected or connecting it to a phase terminal: The green-yellow core goes only to the earth contact; leave it slightly longer than the other cores so that it is the last to break if the cable is pulled.
- Not tightening the strain relief: The clamp must grip the outer sheath, or the terminals take the pull.
- Swapping the phase order in the plug of a machine that runs backwards: The machine will then run backwards on a correctly wired socket. Phase order is corrected at the sockets, and all sockets are brought to the same order.
- Pulling the plug under load: Arcing wears the contacts; stop the machine with its own switch first.
Standard
- IEC 60529: IP degrees of protection (IP44).
Brands in the catalog
The Three-Phase Rubber Plugs category has 8 active products: Mete Enerji 3, TEM 3, TP Elektrik 1, Bylion 1. Matching sockets are in Three-Phase Rubber Sockets (37). For machines with red CEE connectors, see CEE Standard Plugs and Sockets.
Frequently asked questions
Does a three-phase rubber plug fit a red CEE socket?
Rubber plugs named 3x25A and 4x25A do not; their pin layouts are different. If the machine is supplied from a red CEE socket, use a CEE plug.
Does a 3x25A plug fit a 4x25A socket?
Both are 25 A three-phase products, but naming and pin layout can vary by brand. Compare the pin layout first; the safest choice is a plug and socket from the same range.
How many cores does a three-phase plug take?
A plug with a 3P+E contact arrangement takes a four-core cable: three phases and the green-yellow earth. On a plug without a neutral contact, the neutral core is not used.
Can an IP44 three-phase plug be used in the rain?
IP44 protects against splashing water and rain, provided the socket is also IP44 and its lid stays closed. Where water pools or the area is washed down, choose IP67 CEE plugs and sockets.
