What Is a Deep Junction Box with Plugs? Sizes and Selection Criteria

A deep junction box with plugs is a surface-mounted ABS box with an opaque cover, plugged cable entries and more depth than a standard box with the same base.

A deep junction box with plugs is a surface-mounted ABS junction box with an opaque cover whose cable entries come closed with plugs and which is made deeper than a standard box with the same base size. It is used at splice and distribution points where many cables meet, thick conductors must be bent or terminal blocks need room.

Boxes with plugs, knock-out boxes and standard-depth boxes

TypeCable entryWhen to choose it
Deep box with plugsEntries come closed with plugs; only the plug of an entry a cable will pass through is removed or openedMany cables and large cross-sections
Deep knock-out boxThe entry point is broken out of the body and cannot be closed againSame depth, different entry
Standard box with plugsSame plugged entries, shallower bodyFew splices and thin cables

Çetinkaya Pano makes its plugged boxes with the same base in two depths:

Selection criteria

  1. Depth: The third value in the size is the depth. Choose the deep model if cables cannot bend under the cover without strain or terminal blocks will sit on top of each other.
  2. Base size: Chosen by the number of splices and terminal blocks. If the problem is cable bending, move to the deep model instead of a larger base.
  3. Number of entries: The number of cables or conduits must not exceed the plugged entries. Entry count and diameter are not in the product name; check the product page.
  4. Environment: The product data lists IP54 and IP65 values. In damp or rain-exposed places, confirm the IP value of the size you choose on the product page; this protection holds only while every entry is closed with a plug or a suitable cable gland. The catalog data gives the body as halogen-free ABS.

Common mistakes

Standards

Junction boxes fall under IEC 60670-1 and IEC 60670-22, and IP ratings under IEC 60529. The product names carry no declaration of conformity.

Deep junction boxes with plugs in the Welibaba catalog

The Surface-Mounted Deep Junction Boxes with Plugs category lists 6 active products, all Çetinkaya Pano deep opaque ABS boxes with plugs (`ÇP 1359`–`ÇP 1364`); prices are shown on the product pages and they are sold per piece.

Knock-out versions of the same sizes are in Surface-Mounted Deep Opaque Junction Boxes, standard-depth plugged models in Surface-Mounted Junction Boxes with Plugs, and splice terminals in Junction Box Terminal Blocks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a junction box with plugs and a knock-out box?

In a box with plugs the plug is removed or opened only where a cable will pass, and the other entries stay closed. In a knock-out box the entry point is broken out of the body and cannot be closed again. The sizes are the same.

When is a deep junction box needed?

When thick cables cannot bend in a standard box, many splices will be made or terminal blocks do not fit under the cover. For example, on a 190x145 mm base the standard plugged box is 80 mm deep and the deep model 140 mm.

Can a deep junction box with plugs be used outdoors?

Yes, if its IP rating suits the location. Where it is exposed to rain choose at least IP65, keep the entries closed and bring cables in from below.
